Much to the annoyance of E, a lot of friends and not to mention my mother, you can always find me on my smart phone. I know there are certain moments where it's absolutely unacceptable but even at the dinner table sometimes, you'll find me multi-tasking away with a laptop on the right, an iPad on the left and my trusty iPhone! I log on the computer as soon as I get home from the work, which is a mere 15-20 minutes walk. Pathetic isn't it?
Please, I'm no neurosurgeon, the next Anna Wintour or the Publicist of the President, I do not need to be constantly wired as I am in no danger of running to a hospital to perform a life-threatening brain surgery or in the speed dial of the Press Secretary to conduct some damage control for The Man. I suspect that the reason I am incessantly connected is simply because this behaviour is not only accepted nowadays but it's almost expected. Let's take this run of the mill conversation for example:
Friend - Hey ML, how are you?
ML - (without looking up from the iPhone) I am so busy!
Friend - So, how was your weekend?
ML - Busy.
When did we become so obsessively immersed in technology that we are so un-present to the present moment? We are always online or using some type of technology that we end up devoting less than our hundred percent. Perhaps I can change that in the New Year.
So, what about you dear friends, what type of technology are you always hooked up to?
Wait, hold that thought while I check my Blackberry.
