Holiday outfits – What to wear when the invite says “festive”

Hi there, Twenty York Street readers! It's JoAnn from Sidewalk Chalk, and I'm so happy to fill in for Marilou while she's out.

Like the greeting card companies, I thought I'd go ahead and roll out the welcome wagon for the holidays. Though it might be too early for mistletoe and sleigh bells, it's never too early to be thinking about to wear to the many events that the season has to offer. However, it can be a bit tricky: how do you dress in a “festive” way without donning a Santa cat sweater? Be it a work or social function, here are just a few tips from my own closet on how to make your wardrobe work for you during your next holiday party:

Wear a bright, saturated color.

One of the easiest things to wear in these social situations is a dress: it's one piece for an entire ensemble, so you don't have to worry about scurrying around and finding different pieces. I suggest buying a dress in a saturated, solid color, so that it's appropriate for the season's events but it's minimal enough to be something you can wear year-round. Some colors to consider: Try seasonal colors (green, red, blue, purple) or metallics (bronze, gold, silver). For a work event, I would suggest picking a dress or blouse that's modest in cut, but bright in color.

Go sparkly.

The holidays are a great time to try the sparkly sequin trend – it seems festive, like you're dressing like an ornament. If you're not sure what colors to try, consider wearing a blouse or dress in neutral colors like black, gold, bronze or white – your piece will still be shiny enough to get noticed. With a showcase piece like this, you'll want to stick to minimal accessories so they won't overshadow it. A little shy of too much sparkle? Try the trend with a smaller piece, such as a headband or clutch bag.

Adorn yourself.

If you prefer the no-fuss sensibility of black clothing, consider wearing some big, statement jewelry such as a necklace, brooch or bracelet. In this case, choose just a couple big accessories to spice up your Little Black Dress or blouse.

What's your favorite item to wear to holiday parties? What are you excited to wear this year? Share!

Thanks again for having me, Marilou!

That emerald/turquoise dress is so perfect for winter and for summer... I need it for layering.

But i'm on a year shopping ban. (At least in an ostensible fashion!)
