What and Where
Before I launch into today's post, let me just tell you how weird it was to be so disconnected to the world of technology! I apologize for missing your posts but for some odd reason (it's 2010, this shouldn't happen anymore!), my Twitter account wouldn't authorize my log-in and when we crossed over the border, AT&T wouldn't provide me a data network so I had no Internet so no following my Tweety Birds for Black Friday deals, oye!
On to today's fashion tip's - the versatility of the white shirt! This first outfit was completely inspired by my fabulous blogger friend Naina, a professional career momma who manages to always look great in every outfit she puts on. I usually reserve my sequins and blings during nights out but paired with a crisp button down shirt, you can take this ensemble to the office on a casual Friday, a city brunch with friends on Sunday or a movie matinee in the afternoon. Simply keep the top simple by choosing less feminine shirts, e.g. a tank top with a denim jacket, a lace cami with a boyfriend cardi or any form fitting or flowy black blouse will surely do!

Style tips
I'm still mortified to recall the time I walked in into a meeting, with black trousers and tucked in white button down... my colleague turns around and jokingly (not funny!) said, here's our waitress for the day! Ugh! Since then, I've never worn that combination together but I've found a chicer alternative: the white button down over black skirt combo!
The colour palette on this is very simple, you can definitely pile on the statement accessories: from necklaces to bracelets to bold earrings and look at me scarves. And this, you can wear anywhere! I say, go to a restaurant and stand beside a server, let's see who's calling you a waitress now? Okay, who am I kidding, someone may still say - excuse me, can I have the bill please?
Beautiful floral details on this silk crepe skirt.
How would you style your crisp white button down my lovelies? Happy, Happy Monday!

I love the white shirt with sequins, but I don't think I could pull it off in my work environment.
I haven't wor a white button down shirt and a black bottom in years: my first job required it as a uniform, and I tired of it over the 3 years!
Love the skirts in both outfits.. and your snazzy gloves :) Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Both these looks are gorgeous! I'm guilty as charged with the waiter look too - I need to adopt your FAR chicer idea with that gorgeous skirt!
Both skirts are beautiful. I wish I could wear that first sequin skirt toowork but it seems to be a bit too bling bling for my work environment. You pull it off so well.
Love your Skirts.

the sequined skirt is lovely and it's perfect for the holiday season right now! the color makes it not as formal and it's a great festive addition to any outfit!
i love the beautiful floral details in the black skirt, and i don't think anyone will be mistaking you for a server in that outfit!
and i'm sorry to hear about your phone not working after crossing the border, but hopefully you were able to find some good deals?

Not sure how sequins woud fly at my conservative office, but I'm definitely liking that combo! As for your coworker's "Waitress" comment....how rude! But I do like the skirt alternative :)
Oooh I just love your blog! You've got great style, and the photos are well-done too.
As for me, I like to make a plain white shirt look a little edgy by pairing it with faded jeans, black boots, and chunky jewelry.
Gorgeous outfits, both of them. Particularly love the sequin skirt (duh). Lol at the waitress story; that's a constant concern of mine whenever I pair that combo together.

Hey Hun!! I'm glad that you like the side bar :) I like how you paired the white collar shirt with the skirts. Really pretty. I too will wear white shirts with black pants and feel like I'm a waitress.. but who cares. It's been that style for many years because it works!
I see that you were on Em's list for the dinner with all Ottawa Fashion Bloggers. My email is love.ashelle@yahoo.com Do you know if Mel got the invite too? I wanted to pass along the event.
Love both skirts but the sequined one would definitely be saved for the Holidays!
^oops I meant to say weekends not Holidays LOL!
You are always a walking advertisement for Banana Republic! I love both of those skirts!!
Love both of these looks! Looking like waitstaff is one of those things I always seem to forget about when dressing in white on top and black on the bottom. I like your alternative to pants--a skirt. Still looks chic AND professional!
Daytime sequin glamour=amazing!!! You're like the poster girl for Banana- love that store and both outfits are divine! Can't wait to meet you!
xo Emily
Well, first I would need to find a white button-down that looks 1/8 as good on me as this does on you! You look AMAZING!
That black skirt with the flower details is especially gorgeous!
I've missed you! Hope I can keep up with my blog reader to stay connected!
Great outfits!
Gotta love technology right?
Thanks for the shout out! I love the sequin skirt on you! It looks amazing paired up with the white button down shirt. I just bought a button down from H&M and next time I am going to wear it with my skirt along with my new brown riding boots. It's the perfect daytime look. By the way I love your black skirt too. Hope you are doing well. Naina
I remember that skirt on naina--love it with a white button down too!
Love that black skirt--those rosettes are such a lovely touch!
Girl I see ya in that sequined skirt!! LOVE IT!! You and Naina both rocked it so well...sigh. sequins.
And I really like the bottom one, too. The detailing is so intricate.
xo,

Great post you look fab! I agree 100% with you on white shirts...they are an absolute must and can be styled so many ways!

Good Heavens, lady, you are seriously so inspirational! I LOVE the white top with both skirts- such different looks, but both are gorgeous.
You have some shiny skirt action going on. I like the black one the most. Thanks for sharing the photos and drop by me too when you have time.
Cheers,
I do love some good sequins and sparkle. I think it's great the way you dressed the skirt with the crisp white button down!
love how you put it with the sequin skirt!
Love that crisp white shirt! You are 100 percent correct. It's versatile, stylish and too often overlooked! I have one that I usually only wear as a layering piece. Perhaps it's time to dust if off and let it shine (like your sparkles! Amazing)
what a great skirt!
That skirt is very pretty on you. As for the waitress comments, pay no attention to fools! Im feeling you on the technology thing, glad you worked it out! XOXO
M... that sequin skirt is gooooooorgeous. I want one. :) If I find the right sequin fabric, I'm definitely gonna fashion one for myself.
How have you been? Hope all is well and you're enjoying this beautiful Monday!
xx Love & Aloha
I'm always afraid to try black and white for that reason, but your shirt and skirt work so well. Also, can I just tell you how much I love that sequined skirt with the oxford? So much love!
that bronze skirt is AMAZING on you. lovely!
x
Arent you gorgeous as heck in that shiney little skirt?? whoa woman.....totally HAUTE:)
I like to "Man up" my white button downs, lol....vests....even a tie would be a nice touch:)
Stop by and say Hello:)

Black and white is always a perfect combo (that's why those waiters tried to steal it and pass it off as their own).
I love how you are doing causal sequins - you look amazing!
Chic on the Cheap
Love the sequin skirt for daytime-- so chic! The bronze colour is perfect and the fact that the sequins are a bit more matte make it so much more wearable!
I've actually been wishing I had the perfect white button down on hand with me while styling my outfits for the past week or so. I've never bothered to purchase it because I also used to dress like a 'waitress' in my very early days when I went in for interviews. Needless to say I never got calls back :) Anyway, nowadays I think it's the perfect backdrop for a big statement necklace or a really detailed skirt! I like how yours has just enough detail to be a bit different but is still classic in every way.
Happy Monday girl!
Jen
No fashionista am I but I do know that you can't go wrong with a white shirt EVER! And that black skirt is fabulous! Thanks for stopping by my blog....
Man, you have the ability to rock simple items (like a white shirt) that is enviable. And these skirts are really cute.
I've only recently discovered the joys of a great white shirt. I have a large bust, and button downs aren't always my friend. It's a struggle to find the right one! I love how you paired your simple white shirt with two great skirts. Both outfits look great!
I think you look awesome in both of these outfits, the skirts are my favorites!

RAWR.... sequins!! so chic... you rock the office girl..I have to try this for my next executive meeting.. yes, kiss the waitress goodbye.. lol too funny.. too many times I wore that kind of white and black dull outfit.. then day2daywear was born and that was the end of that!!!
you look awesome!! xoxo J
I think the black bottoms and white shirt are just classic and clean looking. It always looks good and thats why restaurants choose to have them.
I love both those skirts!
Your skirts are to die for!

I just stumbled across your blog for the first time and thought I would say hello! I looked through a few of your posts and love your style.
I'm a blogger as well, about the world of art, but my history is in interior design and fashion. I love to hear what people are saying! Hope we get to see more of each other in the future.

You always look so amazing in these classic outfits... and I just love that sequined skirt!
What fabulous skirts - both of them ... !!! But the BR one is just fantastic. Great looks!
Those are both super fabulous skirts!! I definitely like pairing a white button down with a black skirt!! I love these outfits! Sorry to hear about your technology troubles!! I love these outfits though! :)
Love that skirt!! This look is great!
I love both outfits! :) really sexy working girl! :)
Love it especially the sequins skirt!
You look really great both ways -- love that sequined skirt! I'm usually not a white shirt person, but if I did style mine, I'd probably go the same route that you did: with an interesting, eye-catching skirt with something extra going on with it, like a pattern.
You look so great! I'm sorry I've been a slacker on commenting lately -- still getting back to the routine after my long holiday. Love you ML
xoxo J
Love both looks, I think the details really make it. Keeping with black and white means you can go big with pintucks and floral-ruffles. I like my white shirt layered under my emerald green shirt dress.
Totally in love with both of these skirts!!
Love this outfit! Makes me wish I had a sequin skirt now.
What a rude coworker! What gives MEN who probably have zero fashion sense the right to comment on what YOU'RE wearing?! Gawd, I get that all the time too. I think though you could totally wear that combo again, so long as you spiced it up with some colourful accessories.
