Let me start this post by telling you about Lisa's interesting but appalling blog entry yesterday: Waste Not, Want Not. I wasn't aware of this waste disposal technique by retail stores in Canada and the United States until I read that article and I was abhorred. Considering the large scale of unemployment and homelessness in both countries, these retail discards could have been put to better use. Its one thing to leave trash bags of clothing outside for others to find but to have most items (brand new, just out of season clothing), slashed with box cutters or razors to make sure that they would never be worn or sold, is beyond comprehension. I'm not sure what can be done about it on a larger scale but on a personal level, I agree with Linda at Style Stance and I think we all have a social (and environmental) responsibility and in our own way, we can have STYLE + SUBSTANCE.
Last week, we went to the Value Village for the very first time. Well we, as in E dropped me off at the thrift store and he drove off like its nobody's business to Best Buy. I've been telling JoAnn I will definitely try it but I never had the chance so I hope she's proud of me today! E was confused as to why I wanted to go there and since I really didn't know what to expect either, I said, I'm exploring different horizons... I could be saving you money by going here, you never know! Spend money to save money! Yep that's my math and economics courses put together, whatever works.
It took a long time to sift through racks and racks of not so great (awful) dresses, I saw one I liked but it happened to be an LBD. My first instinct was to grab 'em and buy 'em but how many Little Black Dresses does a woman really need? In the end however, I was able to take these beauties home! And look at the prices! The Nine West phyton belt jumped at me (I was so exited I thought it was Michael Kors) and it looked almost brand new!
I must say that I am so, so proud (hence, the three photos) of my most treasured find - these Vintage Cowboy Boots! They're obviously worn and there's scratches on the leather and heels but they just add more character to them, don't you think? I have to say that they are the best $9.99 (Canadian!) that I've ever spent and part of their proceeds go to funding non-profit organizations, not only in the local community and but also in communities in developing countries.
What do you think of this New York Times article? I would love to hear your personal views on being fashionable and socially responsible at the same time!

What fantastic finds!!! Those scarves are just beautiful. I have a belt very similar to that one that I bought at the Salvation Army store!
I only have a minute right now so I can't read the article you linked to, but I'm going to when I get a chance!
Those boots TOTALLY rock! I saw the comment you left at our old URL...just wanted to make sure you knew where we currently posting in case you want to check it out! http://www.bonbonrosegirls.com/
I go to Value Village all the time! Great for buying old vinyl records, random dishes and other things for around the house.
Ack, sorry I deleted the last comment -- I was logged into the wrong email account! Oops.
What an interesting post. It seems so wasteful to just leave brand-new clothing out to rot. It makes me wonder if there is any way to cut back on clothing production, or a more resourceful way to use the unneeded clothing.
Your thrift finds are absolutely wonderful -- you've got a great eye for wonderful pieces. Do you think you'll go thrifting more now? Those boots are so great, and I love those scarves. I am sending you an email right ...now! Have a fab day, friend!
Thanks for linking and I love your thrify finds!
Another great option in NYC is Housing Works. The money goes towards helping HIV positive in the city. It is still mind boggeling what happens when there are SO MANY OTHER options!!

Inspired by Melissa's post yesterday, I want to thank you guys very much for not only visiting the blog but always leaving your most valued comments!
I really appreciate it!
Love the belt! when will I see you wearing it? Oh, I could foresee a coffee table book with all your fashion shots on it. Looking forward to the next blog about the beautiful pieces from Ireland!

Love all the great deals you found! The scarves are lovely.
You asked me if trench coats count for the 20 for 20 challenge. The answer is yes.
Great finds sweetie! I'm glad you did try! I'm sure you'll keep coming
back for more. Love the boots! They will surely look fabulous teamed with
your denim shorts and fedora hat ;)
I LOVEEEE THESE BOOTS!! AHH! So cute. So cute. So cute. You did so well. haha :) I would pay you if they had another pair to send, buy, and ship them to me hahah:)
Thank you for your blog comment! It made me smile:)
I'm not that great about vintage shopping. I just get easily overwhelmed and discouraged. Looks like you got some good finds, apparently I'm scouring all the wrong places. Hope your good shopping luck is heading my way.
Sorry for being away today Ladies... I wasn't feeling too great so I was off from work.
I promise tomorrow there's a new outfit post plus a call for suggestions on new features.
Much love!
I'll have to have a look into those retail practices you mentioned when I have time... that actually really bothers me. I mean, at the very least couldn't stores have stuff shipped to 3rd world countries and to people that can't afford clothes? Take the tags off, whatever... but you know?
Anyways. I love love love the boots. I am so so on the successful side when it comes to thrifting (best find being a $25 Ann Taylor evening gown) but nothing next to my bestie Bailey. She finds the greatest things ever. Wow did you score for your first attempt though. Beginners luck. And now you will be addicted.

Eh, how come you didn't get me anything from the thrift store? =(
Wanna do a garage sale here at home next week? i have to get rid of some of the stuff in my room and in the basement. there's just not much room. are you up to it?
OH MY GOD!
I have been looking for cowboy boots for CENTURIES. Especially legit cowboy boots like the ones you found! I'm so so so so so jealous!

I think I'm going to make it my mission to go to every thrift store in my area again.
Great buy! AND FOR SO CHEAP!
I am in agreement - it's really terrible that perfectly usable clothing gets destroyed when there are people in need. H&M got caught doing this a few months back here in nyc and there was a huge public outcry that hopefully helped to shame them into re-thinking such policies.
Your cowboy boots are totally awesome - can't wait to see them in an outfit post soon!
